William and Mary assistant track and cross country coach Adam Otstot, 25, of Williamsburg set a new course record Saturday morning at the 13th annual 5K Mental Health Recovery Run at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg. Otstot ran under 4:55 pace per mile to record a 15:13, bettering the previous record of 15:20 by former Jamestown High School star Bryce Ruiz, who set the previous record of 15:20 in 2005, while a student at North Carolina State. Walsingham Academy cross country and track coach Mark Tompkins, 31, of Williamsburg was second in 15:38, then early leader Adam Canning, 21, of Williamsburg, a Virginia Commonwealth University senior, was third in 16:13.
For the women, 13-year-old phenom Heidi Peterson of Williamsburg set a personal record of 19:26 to win the Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix race for the women over Laura Shannon, 44, of Williamsburg (19:54) and Connie Glueck, 42, of Williamsburg (a PR 20:18). Peterson's previous PR was a 19:37 that won the Newport News 5K Run for the Community on April 14th.
