A Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix Event

William and Mary assistant track coach Adam Otstot, 23, of Williamsburg won his second Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix race of 2006, capturing the 12th annual 5K Run for Mental Health with a time of 16:07 at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg. Runner-up was another distance-running coach, Mark Tompkins, 30, of Newport News, the Walsingham Academy track and cross country coach, timed in 16:20. The two also went 1-2 at the Jamestown High School Swamp Run in March. Third overall was 51-year-old Steve Chantry of Williamsburg, also under 17 minutes with a 16:56. Fourth overall (in 17:08) was current CRR Grand Prix leader Michael Mann, 37, of Hampton. Mann has 38 points to Chantry’s 32. Otstot, John Piggott and Keith Schumann each have 20.
For the women Jennifer Quarles, 34, of Williamsburg won her third CRR Grand Prix race of 2006 (to go with two second places), running an 18:44 to win by 50 seconds over Valerie Plyler, 46, of Yorktown (19:34). Laura Shannon, 43, of Williamsburg was third in 19:51. Quarles leads the Grand Prix (after five races) with 48 points, followed by Plyler (43) and Shannon (38).
May is National Mental Health Month. The race was organized by the Colonial Services Board, to benefit the Williamsburg Alliance for the Mentally Ill (WAAMI).
